Arts & Crafts Gardens Talk
Posted: Friday 7th March 2025
On Monday we were joined by our friends’ from the Merstham Women’s Group to hear the excellent Cherrill Sands talking about Arts & Crafts gardens in the Southy East.
Cherrill looked at a number of outstanding garden, looking from a perspective of how the gardens were designed and influenced by the trends of their time.
Cherrill gave us many examples starting with East Grinstead’s gem Standen, then William Robinson’s Gravetye Manor, and then talked about some of the gardens designed by Gertrude Jekyll. The last garden was Great Dixter, now better known for the genius of the late Christopher Lloyd
It was a truly fascinating and interesting evening
Not too far away Standen is now owned by The National Trust and restored to its former glory. Great Dixter is also open to the public. Although open to the public Gravetye Manor is now a 4-star hotel. You can see the gardens by paying for a tour see Garden Tours Gravetye Manor.
