Richmond Park is the largest of several parks around London which are Royal Parks, originally used by royalty for entertainment and are now maintained as a charity! It has 300 fallow deer and 300 red deer which help to keep the Park in its state of a mix of trees and grasses and bracken. Simon mentioned that the public are warned not approach the deer during the rutting season – there have been incidents.
Jim Arbury from RHS Wisley delivered a very informative and interesting talk about growing fruit in a small garden.
He explained all about different kinds of fruit tree rootstocks appropriate for a small garden including the various forms that can be grown including cordons, fan, espalier and pyramid. He also provided examples of the best varieties.
