Crocus
When the sun shines, crocus flowers open to a beautiful goblet shape that reminds us that warmer days are ahead. Often one of the first flowers to greet the new year, there are varieties that flower from late winter to mid-spring. The flowers range from white and yellow to purple and lilac.
Early flowering crocuses need sunshine and soils that drain well. Some types – like Crocus tommasinianus - do really well under deciduous trees and shrubs, while Crocus vernus grows happily in lawns. Most types grow well in containers.
When flowering has finished it’s best to let the foliage die down naturally – so avoid running the mower over any that are growing in your lawn!
