Snowdrops (Galanthus)
Always a welcome sight in month that, at times, never seems to end!
There are, surprisingly a large number of different types of snowdrop but all prefer soils that do not dry out.
Once clumps of snowdrops start to develop in your garden you can carefully split them after flowering, to create more plants. This should be done just as the leaves are starting to die off in late spring. You can repeat this over the years to create large (and impressive looking!) drifts.
Snowdrops are often best bought ‘in the green’ as potted plants from nurseries or garden centres. because the bulbs can dry out quickly.
When planting choose a semi-shaded area and add leaf mould/ garden compost to prevent the ground drying out.
